GILL GIVES TREMENDOUS RESULTS

After the continuous efforts of Mr. Gill & his police force, Terrorism had reduced. It had not been eliminated, but the killing of the innocent people had reduced.

As Per Statistics, In 1989, 2,072 Lives Were Lost (Down By 15%). Importantly, The Number Of Terrorists Killed Was 703, Up 88% As Compared To 1988. The Punjab Police, Under K.P.S. Gill, Notched Up Significant Counter-Insurgency Successes.

Due To Police Action, The Terrorists Had By January 1989, Been Pushed Into A Thin Strip Along The Border, With Over 70% Of Their Strikes Now Restricted To Three Districts—Gurdaspur, Amritsar, And Ferozpur. This Proportion Was A Constant Throughout 1989 And Well Into 1990.

ONE REAL POLICE ACTION: One such example was given by Mr. Jatinder Pannu. He said, "When one goes from Tarn Taran to Chabal, on the road, there is a village called Lalu Phuman. There was a huge sugarcane field and many terrorists were hiding there for more than 72 hours and cross-firing was going on between the police and the terrorists. During the night, the police used headlights of tractors and cars to prevent terrorists from escaping. There was a tube-well in a closed room near that field which is a normal thing in the agricultural farms. At the terrace of that room, I saw KPS Gill, the DGP of Punjab Police, firing from a light machine gun along with a constable of Punjab Police."

Mr. Vijay Chopra, MD, and Editor-in-Chief of Hind Samachar Group. which publishes Hindi daily Punjab Kesari and Punjabi daily Jagbani had been a witness to many of Gill's travels across the State. He said, “Once there was some problem in Tarn Taran at that time ( The most affected area with Terrorism). Gill Sahib told the officers to remain on the roads in some particular belt during the night. He didn't only give the orders but the whole night, he, remained present on the roads of Tarn Taran. Now anybody can imagine what would the subordinate officers do when their DGP himself was on the roads of a most troubled area."

Gill's bravery acted as a catalyst for several other officers. Several Junior officers, motivated by his leadership, volunteered for postings to the most sensitive and dangerous areas, which were critical to the anti-terrorist campaign.

This turnaround in leadership style, which placed a premium on leading from the front, fostered great camaraderie at all levels. It energized the lowest ranks who were confronting the terrorists on a daily basis.
